Key Stage 4

Year 10 and year 11 students study GCSE Computer Science from Eduquas.

There are three units in the course:

Unit 1:    Understanding Computer Science – 50%

This is the computer science theory part of the course, which is assessed by a written exam. In this unit students learn about software, hardware, computer logic, computer security, computer systems, data representation and computer networks.

Unit 2:    Computational Thinking & Programming - 30%

In this unit students develop practical computer skills in:

  1. making websites with HTML
  2. algorithms and programming concepts
  3. programing games in Java

The unit is assessed with an on-screen examination where students will complete one task for each of the three skills they will develop.

    Unit 3:    Developing Computer Solutions – 20%

Students will learn to program using the Python programming language, coding solutions to a range of problems. This unit is assessed with a twenty-hour controlled assessment where students develop a programming solution to a set task.

GCSE Computer Science will develop critical thinking, analysis and problem-solving skills. It will be a fun way to develop these skills, which can be transferred to other subjects and even applied in day-to-day life.

The course provides an excellent preparation for further study and employment in the field of ICT or computing. The increasing importance of ICT means there will be a growing demand for professionals who are qualified in this area. Those who’ve taken GCSE Computer Science and study the subject at A Level or university will have a significant advantage over other candidates when applying for a career with a technology company, or in engineering, financial management, science or medicine.
